Memory card not included
Most dash cams don't include a memory card. You'll need a Class 10 or U3 microSD card rated for continuous recording — standard cards will fail quickly under the heat and write cycles a dash cam generates.

What resolution do you need?
1080p Full HD is the minimum worth buying in 2026. It's enough to read a number plate in good light but can struggle at night or in poor weather. For reliable plate capture in all conditions, 1440p (2K) is the sweet spot and doesn't cost much more than 1080p at this point.
4K is available but the file sizes are huge and the improvement over 2K for everyday evidence purposes is marginal. Unless you specifically need it, 2K is plenty.
Our verdict
The Viofo A119 Mini 2 is hard to beat at its price point. If you want a UK brand with phone support and a warranty you can easily claim, Nextbase is worth the premium.
Frequently asked questions
Is dash cam footage admissible in UK courts?
Yes. Dash cam footage is widely accepted as evidence in UK insurance claims and court proceedings. It's been used successfully in thousands of cases, including crash-for-cash fraud prosecutions.
Do dash cams reduce insurance premiums?
Some insurers offer a discount for fitting a dash cam. It's worth asking your insurer directly. More importantly, having footage protects your no-claims bonus if you're involved in an incident that wasn't your fault.
What SD card do I need for a dash cam?
Use a microSD card rated U3 or V30, designed for continuous recording. A 64GB card gives you roughly 4–6 hours of footage before it loops and overwrites. Avoid cheap unbranded cards — they fail under the heat and constant writes a dash cam generates.
Is it legal to use a dash cam in the UK?
Yes, dash cams are legal in the UK. You should not use footage in a way that breaches GDPR, and you shouldn't upload footage of other road users publicly without a legitimate reason. Recording for personal safety and insurance purposes is fine.
