Always check cold

Tyre pressure should always be checked when the tyres are cold โ€” before you've driven more than a couple of miles. Heat from driving increases pressure and gives a false high reading.

What to look for in a tyre pressure gauge

The main choice is digital vs analogue. Digital gauges read to the decimal point and are easier to use in low light โ€” most have a backlit screen. Analogue gauges need no batteries and are harder to break, which is why they still have fans.

Beyond that, look for a flexible hose (makes reaching valve stems much easier), multiple pressure units (PSI and Bar at minimum), and a reading that holds on screen for at least 10 seconds so you can actually see it.

Our verdict

For most drivers, the ATsafepro digital gauge is the sweet spot โ€” accurate, affordable, and built to last. If you'd rather not worry about batteries, the Draper analogue is the most reliable no-fuss option.

How to check your tyre pressure

Remove the dust cap from the valve stem, press the gauge chuck firmly onto the valve, and read the pressure. Compare it to the recommended pressure found on the sticker inside your driver's door jamb or in your handbook. Refit the dust cap when done.

Check all four tyres, and don't forget the spare if you have one. Most manufacturers recommend checking monthly and before long journeys.

Frequently asked questions
Are digital tyre pressure gauges more accurate than analogue?
Generally yes โ€” digital gauges read to 0.1 PSI increments and are less prone to user error. A good analogue gauge is still perfectly accurate enough for everyday use, but digital makes it harder to misread.
How often should I check my tyre pressure?
At least once a month and always before a long motorway journey. Tyres naturally lose around 1 PSI per month, so regular checks prevent gradual underinflation going unnoticed.
What pressure should my tyres be?
It varies by vehicle and load. Check the sticker on the inside of your driver's door jamb or your vehicle handbook. Never use the max pressure printed on the tyre sidewall โ€” that's the tyre's limit, not the recommended pressure.
Can I check tyre pressure at a petrol station?
Yes, most forecourt air machines include a pressure gauge. However, they're often poorly maintained and inaccurate. Your own gauge gives a more reliable reading and you can check whenever you like without driving anywhere first.
