The 7°C rule

Winter tyres are made from a compound that stays softer and grips better below 7°C. Above that, they wear faster than summer tyres. In the UK, fitting them from November to March makes sense for most drivers.

Do I need winter tyres in the UK?

Unlike much of Europe, winter tyres are not legally required in the UK. But that doesn't mean they're not worthwhile. If you live in a rural area, drive in Wales or Scotland, or regularly commute in cold early mornings, winter tyres make a genuine difference to stopping distances and confidence on cold wet roads.

If you only drive in cities or mild areas and rarely see frost, a good quality all-season tyre is a more practical compromise — you avoid the cost and hassle of swapping twice a year while still getting better cold-weather performance than a summer tyre.

Our verdict

For rural and highland drivers, winter tyres are worth every penny. For city drivers in southern England, a quality all-season tyre is the more practical answer. The Continental WinterContact TS 870 is our pick for anyone who does want to go full winter — excellent performance without the Michelin price tag.

Frequently asked questions
Are winter tyres legal in the UK?
Yes, completely legal. They're not mandatory as they are in some European countries, but there's nothing stopping you from fitting them and significant safety benefits to doing so in cold conditions.
Can I fit just two winter tyres?
It's not recommended. Fitting winter tyres on the front only creates an imbalance — the front will grip but the rear can step out. Always fit winter tyres in sets of four, or at minimum in axle pairs.
Will winter tyres affect my insurance?
Fitting winter tyres doesn't automatically invalidate your insurance, but you should inform your insurer as it's a modification to the vehicle. Most insurers are neutral or positive about it — it can even reduce your premium with some providers.
What's the difference between winter tyres and all-season tyres?
Winter tyres are optimised purely for cold conditions and are removed in summer. All-season tyres are a compromise — better than summer tyres in cold weather but not as good as a dedicated winter tyre. For the UK's mild winters, all-season tyres are often the practical sweet spot.
